The Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act provides Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) members with complete protection, which the Bombay High Court has upheld in a landmark judgement. The decision, rendered by a Full Bench made up of Justices Revati Mohite Dere, Bharati Dangre, and NJ Jamadar, emphasizes that the protection offered by the Act cannot be restricted to states where people are formally recognized as belonging to the SC or ST.   The Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act), 1989 cannot be limited to a person belonging to a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe to the State or Union Territory in which he is declared to be a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe only; rather, he is entitled to the protection under the Act in any other part of the country where the offence is committed, even if he is not recognized.
